I rustle the newspaper to gain her attention then read off: Council Tax up again in Lytham-St-Anne’s. Highest in country by far. Residents shocked and angered.
Mother doesn’t say anything but I’m sure she’s heard me.
I turn a page and scan it quickly. Michael Barrymore buys house in Lytham-St-Annes. Says I’m here for the duration Mother can’t stand Michael Barrymore but who can?
Mother looks at me over her glasses but still doesn’t say anything.
I turn another page. Bird Flu outbreak in Lytham-St-Anne’s. Third this year. Many perish.
Mother finally speaks with an authority that doesn’t augur well. We are moving to Lytham.
I shrug. Well if you want to risk of catching Bird Flu and bumping into Michael Barrymore every five minutes while paying the highest Council Tax in the country that’s your lookout, Mother.
I return to the paper and go to work on Father. Lytham-St-Anne’s Council bans all Lego models.
What! says Father, almost dropping the top bit of Blackpool Tower. What was that?
Take no notice of him, Geoffrey, says Mother.
I try to think up another discouraging idea. I fail, discouragingly.
