Private Investigations 3

It being Thursday I was back on the trail of Mr Heathcote last night. After I’ve followed him to Chalkers Snooker Club I usually have a few frames of snooker myself while I’m keeping an eye on him, so I won’t look suspicious just hanging around. Last night there are fewer people in than usual and those that are in are already paired off and playing. So Mr Heathcote turns to me and asks me if I’d like a couple frames. This will obviously save me from having to keep an eye on him so I readily agree. We don’t have two frames of snooker but six. He wins four frames, I win two, but I have the highest break (37).

He turns out to be a very nice man and we get along very well, enjoying each other’s company. When it’s time to go he says how much he’s enjoyed the evening and expresses the hope that we might do the same again next Thursday. He may very well have enjoyed it but he didn’t enjoy it as much as me as apart from enjoying the snooker I am being paid fifteen pounds an hour plus expenses for playing it. It amounted to fifty eight pounds in all, including my petrol money and share of the snooker table hire. It dawns on me that I am now a professional snooker player,
and while my earnings aren’t in the Ronnie O’Sullivan league I am probably earning more from the sport than most people.
At lunchtime today I report my findings to Mrs Heathcote. Her husband went to the pictures again. On his own. He saw Crash. My sense of devilment tempts me to tell her he’d been to see The Hustler but I think that might be rubbing it in a bit so I don’t.

I am to follow him again next week. On the way home I worry if I’m doing the right thing by Mr and Mrs Heathcote. I decide that I am. Because although Mrs Heathcote still suspects her husband of having an affair she must by now be suspecting him a bit less, and by not insisting to her that her husband is playing snooker every Thursday night I am not only keeping the peace between them but also allowing Mr Heathcote to indulge in the harmless hobby he so clearly loves. I begin to feel quite saintly.
